May 2008 has been Declared: Osteoporosis Month

May of this year has officially been declared by the National Osteoporosis Foundation as “Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month.”  During the month of May, the foundation will be sponsoring many events as well many other organizations.

The foundation itself will be celebrating by spreading a developed Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign and toolkit that will focus on the risk and serious consequences of osteoporosis for different audiences, and encourage people to take action to protect their bone health and prevent osteoporosis.

Additionally, the foundation has made the Public Service Announcements (available in both English and Spanish) and a “Bone Tool Kit” available online at: http://www.nof.org/awareness2/index.htm

For your ease, we have summarized the information contained in the “Bone Tool Kit” for you.

The Bone Tool Kit is a great resource for basic, easy-to-read information on bone health and osteoporosis, as well as, specific information for diverse target audiences. Each fact sheet or section of the Bone Tool Kit is a reproducible, stand alone piece with essential information for osteoporosis.  There are two main audiences for this kit:

  1. Health Professionals – This kit will be a great resource for health professionals who see patients with or at risk for osteoporosis and need to provide them with additional information.
  2. The General Public – The general public, patients, and family members of those suffering from osteoporosis who need patient-friendly, applicable information about osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment/management.

NOF’s New Clinician’s Guide to Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis

The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) has released its new Clinician’s Guide to Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis to help U.S. healthcare providers make better treatment decisions and assess fracture risk for patients with low bone mass or osteoporosis. The new information in the Guide is based largely on a report (also being released) from the World Health Organization (WHO) detailing the WHO algorithm (FRAX®). This algorithm estimates the likelihood for a person to break a hip or other major bone due to low bone mass or osteoporosis over a period of 10 years. NOF’s new Guide dramatically alters the way patients—both men and women—are evaluated and treated, and better identifies those at risk for fractures from low bone mass or osteoporosis. The Guide represents a major breakthrough utilizing Absolute Fracture Risk methodology as the basis for making treatment decisions in patients with low bone mass or osteoporosis.
